Defining Hot Days & Climate Exposure

These follow the heat-index thresholds OSHA and state heat rules use, so your business case lines up with the standard your safety program is already measured against.

What counts as a hot day

Any working day where the heat index reaches 80°F or higher during the shift. Heat index combines temperature and humidity, so a humid 82°F day counts even though the thermometer looks mild. Count scheduled work days only, not weekends or shutdowns.

Quick estimate: most southern US operations land near 120–180 days. Mid-latitude sites run 80–120. Northern outdoor work is often 40–80. Indoor facilities without climate control frequently exceed 200.

Climate exposure levels

MildHeat index typically 80–85°F at peak. Occasional warm stretches, mostly shaded or ventilated work. Northern climates, spring/fall seasons.

ModeratePeaks commonly 85–95°F. Regular sun exposure, some humidity. Crews notice afternoon fatigue but incidents are uncommon.

HotPeaks routinely 95–103°F, crossing OSHA's 90°F high-heat trigger most days. Direct sun, heavy PPE, or hot indoor processes. Rest cycles required.

ExtremeSustained 103°F+ heat index, or radiant-heat work (roofing, foundries, confined spaces, boilers) where effective exposure far exceeds ambient air temperature.
